From fewer crowds to less traffic to less air pollution, living in a small town comes with a myriad of benefits. Millions of Americans relocated this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Pew Research, approximately 22 percent of adults in the United States — or one in five — have moved. Now more than ever, people are starting to recognize the perks that come from living in a small town. Towns with smaller populations offer a much-needed respite from the endless hustle and bustle of city life. Plus, they are often more affordable and safer than big cities. Read on to learn more about the many benefits that come with living in La Vernia, Texas.

1.  Location

La Vernia is located approximately 30 minutes from San Antonio. The town’s close proximity to San Antonio means that residents can enjoy a quiet life that’s removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. But the close proximity to the big city means that residents can easily commute or head into the city for a day of shopping or to catch a sport’s event.

2.  Rich History

The town of La Vernia has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. Throughout the years, people of Mexican, Native American, Spanish, German and Polish descent have made their mark here. If you want to learn more about the fascinating history of the area, then check out the La Vernia Heritage Museum. Some of the most notable collections include equipment from the city’s earliest volunteer firefighters, 19th-century pottery, images of the busy Chichuahu Road trade route, and the original 1893 San Antonio and Gulf Shore Railroad depot.

3.  Access to Nature

With fall finally here, now is the perfect time to get outside and take advantage of the crisp fall weather. Locals in La Vernia can take advantage of a plethora of parks and trails at their disposal. For a fun day out in the sun, pack up the family and head over to Calaveras Lake. This expansive 3,264-acre reservoir is located in southeast San Antonio. It attracts locals and visitors alike with its variety of recreational activities and watersports, such as boating. It’s also a prime spot for fishing, in large part thanks to the opportunities to catch channel catfish, red drum, and striped bass. Guests can head over to the public access for top-notch shoreline access, as well as campsites, picnic areas, and boat ramps.

Looking for something closer to home? Then La Vernia City Park is the place to go. This spacious park has something for the whole family, from the playground to sports courts to a butterfly garden. The park also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Notably, the Christmas tree lighting festivities and Bluebonnet Fest takes place here.

4.  Lifestyle

One of the best parts about living in La Vernia is the laid-back and peaceful lifestyle. Whether you’re new to town, simply passing through, or a long-time resident, it’s impossible to miss the small-town charm. The city has a population of just over 1,000 residents, resulting in a cozy, neighborly feel. Residents from all walks of life reside here, ranging from retirees to commuters to families looking for a safe place to raise their children.

5.  Community-Spirit and Local Government

Like many small towns, La Vernia is known for its tight-knit community and small-town pride. The town offers the advantages of a friendly country community, with plenty of business services. While the town’s sign says the population is 1,200, the post office services almost 10,000.

In addition to the strong sense of community, La Vernia is proud of the strong local government and dedicated chamber of commerce. The local government prides itself on being approachable, responsible, and concerned for all businesses and families. They are committed to understanding the history, agricultural heritage, and environment. If you’re wanting to

6.  Festivals

La Vernia boasts an abundance of annual festivals and events that attract both locals and spectators from all over the state. If you’re new to town, then be sure to make plans to attend the town’s Bluebonnet Fest. This event is one of the area’s most anticipated festivals and beauty pageants. Miss La Vernia, crowned by the people of Wilson County, runs the show by leading a parade through town. In addition to the pageant and parade, the week boasts plenty more. This includes a parade, dance, carnival, arts and crafts vendors, free petting zoo, and free pony rides. Don’t worry about bringing lunch as there is a plethora of food trucks and even a chili cook-off.

In the fall, join hundreds of cyclists for the Wild West Hammerfest. This ride, which takes place annually, allows cyclists to go on 39-, 57-, or 69-mile rides through the scenic countryside of Texas. You’ll get in your exercise while cruising over the rolling hills and backgrounds of Wilson County. One-fifth of the proceeds from the event go to the La Vernia Veterans Memorial Project, which is being constructed inside La Vernia City Park.

During the winter, don’t miss out on joining the town for the annual Spirit of Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony! This event, which typically occurs the first weekend of December, brings the community together for a special night out. You’ll also have the chance to take photos with Santa, so be sure to bring along your camera.

No matter the season, there’s always something exciting happening in La Vernia. If you’ve recently moved here, these festivals provide the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors and make new friends.

7.  Coffee Shops

Looking for a caffeine fix to help kickstart your morning? If so, then head on over to The Shed. Since first opening its doors, this cozy coffee shop has become the community’s go-to hub for coffee. You can enjoy your coffee hot, iced, or blended. Whether you’re in the mood for a perfectly prepared latte or a no-nonsense cup of drip coffee, you can find all of that and more here. The menu also boasts a wide selection of unique drinks, such as The Lone Star made with caramel, coconut, and mocha. Another popular option is the Southern Belle, composed of chocolate and macadamia nut breve. Be sure to check out the baked goods if you are craving a little something to complement your coffee. You can choose from jumbo muffins, donut holes, homemade cinnamon rolls, and cookies.

In the summer, The Shed also offers shaved iced in a myriad of flavors, which is particularly refreshing on a hot and muggy Texas day. They even offer a handful of sugar-free options, which means that you can enjoy this sweet treat guilt-tree. Shave
